I have always hesitated hosting the MET (meet-eat-talk) group I belonged to at my home. Simple reason is things are a bit messy, especially since I adopted my dog Barnabas. I need to realize that folks are not overly concerned about that. That which matters most to them and to me is hospitality. Truth is churches are messy too. Ministry is messy. The churches described in the New Testament are not Victorian parlors where everything is always picked up and ready for guests. As a colleague in ministry put it well…

THEY ARE MESSY FAMILY ROOMS. THINGS ARE OUT OF ORDER FOR SURE BUT THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS TO CHURCHES. THEY ARE LIVED IN…

They are messy because broken human beings are living in them so dirt is going to be tracked in and handprints are going to appear on the windows and walls. Clothes are going to be scattered around.

Jesus is the One who calls sinners and not the righteous to repentance. And as long as He does the church will be messy. The author of the book of Revelation sees church simply as lampstands: they are places, locations where THE LIGHT OF CHRIST IS SHOWN.

No – our church – out individual lives are not Victorian parlors where everything is in order. In Christ they are that which the light of Jesus Christ shines through. No need to apologize for our lives – our homes they are what they are. They simply are and everybody is welcome into our lives and church.

Our praise team reminds us of this in a wonderful way as they lead us to sing…
